ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – In the renewal of the battle between the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series and the vaunted PA Posse, it was Buddy Kofoid who fired this year’s first shot.

Kofoid led all 35 laps from the pole to win Wednesday night’s Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway, denying Keystone State native Chase Dietz a breakthrough Outlaws victory in the process.

The reigning Outlaws rookie-of-the-year held strong through three early restarts, then navigated traffic to perfection in the closing stages en route to his third win of the season with The Greatest Show on Dirt in the No. 83 Toyota-powered sprinter for Roth Motorsports.

Lincoln marked the 13th victory and 100th career top-10 finish for Kofoid with the Outlaws. The 23-year-old Penngrove, Calif., native has earned 11 of his 13 series wins since joining Roth in June 2023.

“[Lap traffic] was a challenge,” said Kofoid, who earned $12,000 and the event’s signature bayonet trophy for his triumph. “It wasn’t so bad in [turns] three and four, just because the cushion was easier to run and there’s more distance between you and the fence on that end. [Turns] one and two always seem to get really slick here, where you feel like even when you get set in [a groove], you have the tendency to slide to the cushion if you’re down on the bottom.

“I felt really good around the top. Even in the times I didn’t feel great, I still felt like I could make good speed and wasn’t losing ground to the lappers that were on the bottom,” Kofoid added. “When it gets that slick into [turn] one, I feel like it’s good to cut across [the groove] here. And then at the end, I got back higher up again, and then I felt as good there as I did earlier on.

“I’m kind of out of breath; it didn’t feel like a long race, but it took a while to get going.”

After winning the Dash to earn the top starting spot, Kofoid took off like a rocket on the initial green flag, opening a 1.4-second lead in four laps over fellow front-row starter and defending series champion David Gravel before the first caution waved to slow the pace.

Parker Price Miller and Ryan Smith tangled in turn two while racing for 16th, setting up a double-file restart where Kofoid chose the bottom lane and gapped Gravel quickly as sixth-starting Dietz – who had moved forward to third at that point – began to challenge Gravel for the runner-up spot.

Dietz nipped out the position on lap five just before a three-car incident in turn two forced the second caution of the night, eliminating Lucas Wolfe and Freddie Rahmer and dropping Cole Macedo deep in the running order.

Unable to keep pace with Kofoid on the ensuing lap-six restart, Dietz got one final chance at Kofoid after Danny Dietrich slowed with a deflating right-rear tire at the end of lap seven.

He attempted a turn-three slider on lap eight after the green flag, but Kofoid drove back underneath the Stehman Motorsports No. 23D and pulled away to a comfortable advantage after that.

Even as traffic loomed large inside of 10 to go, Kofoid never faltered despite Dietz nearly getting to the rear nerf bar of the No. 83 with two laps left.

“(Going back to the early slider) I feel like the bottom has so much meat here on the frontstretch and out of [turn four], and the top of the straightaway is slick, where I figured if I could take advantage of [Dietz] staying out there and peel down that I could run all the way down the frontstretch before he could even get down there,” Kofoid explained. “I did see his number creeping up the board, but I wasn’t sure at that point if he was really good or took advantage of me starting early a few times.

“I knew he’d be a factor … just glad we could get the job done. It’s cool to beat the Posse and special because of how hard they are when we come into PA.”

Behind Kofoid and Dietz, Anthony Macri made a last-lap pass of Gravel to land the final podium position, with Gravel and 12th-starting Sheldon Haudenschild completing the top five.

Carson Macedo, Skylar Gee, Gio Scelzi, Logan Schuchart, and Dietrich closed the top 10, with Dietrich rallying through the field from his early issue.

Schuchart’s run from 20th to ninth gave him KSE Hard Charger honors for the evening.

The Posse drew first blood during Wednesday’s program, with Dietz setting the overall fast time in qualifying at 13.344 seconds (101.169 mph) around the three-eighths-mile dirt oval.

Dietz, Dietrich, Gee, and Scelzi won heat races, with Brandon Rahmer winning the C-Main. Matt Campbell led the transfer cars into the main event out of the Micro-Lite Last Chance Showdown.

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series continues its week-long battle against the PA Posse Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., during the opening night of Morgan Cup weekend.
