MOBILE, Ala. – Grant Thompson was honored for his Mobile Int’l Speedway Pro Late Model division championship during the half-mile facility’s season-ending banquet on Nov. 16.

The celebration, held at American Legion 250 in nearby Theodore, Ala., saw Thompson collect the trophy for his first track title after a season that included one victory and four top-five finishes in six races.

Thompson, who never finished outside the top 10 at Mobile during the year, boasted an average finish of 3.67 in the No. 00 Rogers-Dabbs Performance Parts Chevrolet for owners William and Lisa Wambles.

It marks the fourth overall Gulf Coast track championship for the 18-year-old Thompson, who earned Pro Truck class crowns at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., in 2021 and 2023 and previously won a Pro Truck title at Mobile in 2019.

“I am so thankful for everyone involved that made our goal become a reality this season,” said Thompson. “You always set out goals for yourself at the beginning of each year, but to see them through and achieve what we hoped to as a team is so rewarding, and I don’t take a moment of it for granted. Lisa and William Wambles have been so good to me and to my family all year, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to drive their race car.

“William worked very hard and put a ton of hours into this car for me to be able to succeed, and that’s something that I don’t take lightly with all he’s done for me. I hope that, going forward, other veteran drivers will be able to step up and help a younger driver like William did for me,” he added. “We never gave up and we fought hard because we knew that this was the end goal. We showed up some nights and were terrible, and other nights we were pretty quick. I had moments where I could have pulled the plug and given up, but this is what happens when you dig deep and find the motivation to keep pushing.

“Thank you to everyone who makes it possible for me to get on the racetrack, and it’s an honor to represent Mobile as a track champion this season.”

Thompson would like to thank partners Rogers Dabbs Chevrolet Performance, WW Motorsports, FURY Race Cars, Impact Racing, KRC Power Steering, Walker Sport Fishing, Gale Force Suspension Management, Dawes Hardware, Race Face Brand Development, and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation for their continued support of his pro late model endeavors.

Thompson will conclude his 2024 racing season Dec. 4-8 during Snowball Derby week at Five Flags Speedway, with specific details to be announced closer to the event.

About Grant Thompson Racing

Grant Thompson is an 18-year-old racing driver from Mobile, Ala., competing in high-profile pro late model events in the Southern United States.

While Thompson cut his teeth in racing in the popular Bandolero division as a youngster, his motorsports career began to attract a mainstream spotlight in 2018, when he began racing in the Southern Pro-Am Truck Series and earned rookie-of-the-year honors at the end of that season.

Thompson earned the 2019 Pro Truck championship at Mobile Int’l Speedway as a 13-year-old. He was also chosen as the winner of the Jr. Late Model Challenge Camp at Madera (Calif.) Speedway that year.

After track titles at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., and Crisp Motorsports Park in Cordele, Ga., in 2020, Thompson moved into the Tundra Super Late Model Series the next year, earning rookie-of-the-year honors on the strength of a sixth-place finish in Tundra points.

Thompson returned to his Pro Truck roots for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, also racing in various pro late model events as his schedule permitted. He earned the Mobile Int’l Speedway track championship for the second time in 2024, but the first time in the track’s pro late model division.

Off the racetrack, Thompson completed his senior year of high school at Cottage Hill Christian Academy this year and graduated in May.
