CONCORD, N.C. – Suffice it to say that two-time defending Daytona 500 winner William Byron isn’t leaving Hendrick Motorsports anytime soon.
Team officials announced Friday morning that Byron has inked a four-year contract extension to remain behind the wheel of the iconic No. 24 Chevrolet through the end of the 2029 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Just 27, Byron has become one of the Cup Series’ elite talents, winning 14 times at stock car racing’s premier level and making six straight playoff appearance from 2019-’24.
He became the youngest multi-time winner of the Great American Race in February and just the fifth driver to win back-to-back Daytona 500s in the event’s storied history.
Since being paired with crew chief Rudy Fugle in 2021, the duo has earned the second-most Cup Series victories in that span with 13 together, and Byron currently ranks second in this year’s regular-season point standings behind Hendrick teammate Kyle Larson.
“We’ve built something special with the No. 24 team,” said Byron, who is in the midst of his eighth full-time Cup Series campaign. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue working with amazing people at Hendrick Motorsports who believe in me, especially Mr. and Mrs. Hendrick. We’ve accomplished some great things that we’re really proud of, but we have even bigger goals ahead.
“I’m excited to go after them with this team and this organization.”
Hendrick Motorsports signed a then 18-year-old Byron in 2016, and he went on to earn Cup Series Sunoco rookie-of-the-year honors two years later.
Byron has made back-to-back Championship 4 appearances over the past two seasons and is the only driver other than Hall-of-Famer Jeff Gordon to win in the No. 24 in the Cup Series.
“William is the real deal,” said team owner Rick Hendrick. “What makes him so special is that he combines natural ability with an unrivaled work ethic. You see it in the great ones – the drivers who could get by on talent alone, but choose to outwork everyone anyway. That’s William.
“On top of it all, he’s a person of high character and embraces his role as a leader,” Hendrick added. “We’re proud to have him in our lineup and look forward to many more wins together.”
Byron, a Charlotte, N.C., native, will contest double duty over Memorial Day weekend at his home racetrack. He’ll drive the No. 17 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet on Saturday in the NASCAR Xfinity Series before racing the crown jewel Coca-Cola 600 Sunday night.
Broadcast coverage of Saturday’s BetMGM 300 airs at 4:30 p.m. ET, live on The CW, the Performance Racing Network, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90. The Coca-Cola 600 follows Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on Prime Video, PRN, and SiriusXM.
