BRANDON, S.D. – Two formerly opposing forces have teamed up to tackle the next seven races with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
In a shock reveal Thursday afternoon, Big Game Motorsports owner Tod Quiring announced that the team will field a second car through the end of August, with 10-time Outlaws champion and modern-era series legend Donny Schatz at the controls.
Joining new teammate and defending Outlaws champion David Gravel, Schatz will debut the Big Game Motorsports No. 15 Friday night at Ogilvie (Minn.) Raceway during the Big O Showdown.
Schatz will continue with Big Game Saturday night at Jackson (Minn.) Motorplex; Aug. 19 at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.; Aug. 22-23 in his home state of North Dakota at River Cities Speedway and Red River Valley Speedway, respectively; and Aug. 30-31 at Huset’s Speedway during the L.G. Everist Huset’s Shootout.
It’s a unique pairing that links the Outlaws’ current top gun with one of its most successful drivers in history, something that Quiring looks forward to while the tour races in his team’s backyard.
“We’re excited to have Donny be a part of the team for the next two and a half weeks,” said Quiring, who owns both Jackson and Huset’s. “Donny has produced a storied career with his 10 World of Outlaws championships and more than 300 World of Outlaws wins. He is also known as one of the cleanest race car drivers in the history of the sport, and he does a tremendous job of taking care of equipment.
“All of that, combined with the support from our crew and driver David Gravel, made it an easy decision to create this second team while the World of Outlaws are racing close to our shop the rest of August.”
Schatz ranks sixth in the Outlaws’ point standings entering Ogilvie, and joins Big Game Motorsports after being released by Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing on Tuesday afternoon, ending an 18-year partnership.
Inside Line Promotions’ Shawn Miller, the public relations representative for the Big Game operation, indicated that while Gravel’s crew chief Cody Jacobs will oversee both cars, additional crew members will be brought in to support Schatz’s effort during his time with the team.
