SHR Teammates Berry & Briscoe Shine At Darlington
DARLINGTON, S.C. - Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Josh Berry and Chase Briscoe each netted their first top-five finishes of the NASCAR Cup Series season Sunday at Darlington Raceway.
Briscoe started 13th and drove up to fifth during the Goodyear 400, the headliner of NASCAR Throwback Weekend, while Berry charged from 33rd to third over the 293-lap race.
“Our car was extremely good on the really, really long run,” Briscoe said after exiting his Mahindra Tractors Ford Mustang Dark Horse.
“It was just the short run that we gave up too much time. It would have been interesting to see how the race played out if it went green until the end, but, overall, it’s a really good weekend for the guys. I wish we could have been a few spots better, but after the last few weeks we needed a solid run.”
Berry’s podium effort was his second-best Cup Series result, behind only a runner-up finish last year at Richmond (Va.) Raceway while subbing for an injured Chase Elliott. It marked his top finish to date for SHR.
“It was just a really good day. We had a really good car yesterday in practice, but unfortunately didn’t qualify like we should have,” Berry said beside his Harrison’s Ford Mustang Dark Horse
“There’s a lot to take from that, but, overall, the car was really strong. We feel like we’re capable of days like this. We just have to keep chipping away at it, keep learning, keep getting better week in and week out. I have a great group around me and this is a finish they deserve for sure.”
For Briscoe, this was his 11th career top-five in the Cup Series, while for Berry, it was his second. Berry inched closer to the playoff cutline, moving up to 20th. He’s 92 points behind Briscoe, who sits 16th, six points to the good over Bubba Wallace.
The NASCAR Cup Series has its All-Star weekend at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway up next.
Coverage of the All-Star Open begins at 5:30 p.m. ET on FS1, the Motor Racing Network, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio channel 90, with the All-Star Race main event following at 8 p.m. ET.
