MOORESVILLE, N.C. — JR Motorsports announced its Darlington (S.C.) Raceway throwback paint scheme on Thursday for Sammy Smith’s No. 8 TMC Transportation Chevrolet, ahead of NASCAR Throwback Weekend, April 4-6.
The orange and black look for Smith will pay tribute to four longtime members of TMC, the nation’s largest employee-owned open deck trucking company, as well as hearken back to a 2003 3 Doors Down scheme driven by Tony Stewart at Michigan Int’l Speedway in what was then the NASCAR Busch Series.
Those being spotlighted include TMC truck drivers Michael Lavigne and Oscar Cordon, customer service representative Ron Bean, and corporate training manager Martin Milner. All four have been part of the company for at least 20 years and their portraits will adorn the car’s quarter panels on both sides.

Of note, the 2003 car was a collaboration between Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Chance 2 Motorsports team and the popular rock band 3 Doors Down. Earnhardt and Stewart both appeared in the band’s music video for their 2003 single “The Road I’m On”.
Smoke started third and finished 11th in the Cabela’s 250, where the Grammy-nominated rock band performed the post-race concert. For perspective — Smith wasn’t born yet in 2003 when the original scheme hit the track.
Smith has notched three top-10 finishes at Darlington in four starts, with his most recent effort at the track “Too Tough to Tame” ending in a fifth-place run last August.
He’ll hope to better that in three races’ time alongside crew chief Phillip Bell, seeking momentum after just a single top-five finish in the first five races of 2025.
Broadcast coverage of Darlington’s Sports Clips Haircuts/VFW Help a Hero 200 is scheduled for Saturday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m. ET, live on The CW, the Motor Racing Network, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
