Colton Kelly Turns Speed Into Pro Truck Victory At Five Flags Speedway
Colton Kelly backed up a week of speed with a commanding win Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway, putting together a complete performance during the Blizzard #3 race weekend in his No. 18K Pave America Pro Truck.
Kelly entered race day with confidence after a strong test session earlier in the week, when he turned the fastest lap he had ever run at Five Flags with an 18.6-second lap. That pace carried straight into the event, where he was second fastest overall before qualifying on the pole with an 18.973-second lap.
Although the dice roll invert placed him third on the starting grid, Kelly wasted little time moving forward. He had an early opportunity to make a move at the drop of the green, stayed patient for a moment, then made the race-winning decision on the back straightaway by driving it three-wide and making the pass stick. From there, he drove away from the field and established control of the race.
A late-race caution tightened the field back up, but Kelly answered with another strong restart and never gave the lead away. He stayed out front through the closing laps, led all 25 circuits, and took the checkered flag to cap one of the most complete runs of his young career.
"I finally had some luck go our way and it feels good to win," Kelly said.
For a young driver, winning during the Blizzard race weekend is an important statement. The event attracts some of the best short track teams in the country, and delivering a performance like this in front of that level of competition is a strong way to get noticed. Kelly not only showed winning speed, but also the patience, racecraft, and composure required to close the deal when the opportunity was there.
Saturday night's win was another meaningful step forward for Kelly and the CLK Motorsports program. On one of the Southeast's most respected short tracks, he showed he had the speed to lead, the decisiveness to take control, and the poise to finish the job.
