WINNING OPPORTUNITY SLIPS AWAY FOR ANTHONY ALFREDO AT NAVAL BASE CORONADO
CORONADO, Calif. — Anthony Alfredo and the Viking Motorsports team saw one of their strongest performances of the 2026 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season come to a disappointing end Saturday afternoon when a massive multi-car accident ended their day while running inside the top five at Naval Base Coronado.
From the start of the United Rentals Driven to Serve 250, Alfredo's No. 96 Dude Wipes Chevrolet showed race-winning speed on NASCAR's historic Southern California street course. Alfredo consistently ran among the leaders, finishing fourth in Stage 1 and third in Stage 2 while positioning himself as a legitimate contender for both a podium finish and his first NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victory.
As the race entered its closing stages, Alfredo remained firmly inside the top five and appeared to be in position to capitalize on a strategy that could have delivered one of the biggest results in Viking Motorsports history.
Unfortunately, that opportunity disappeared in an instant.
While racing near the front of the field, Sam Mayer made contact with the inside wall in Turn 1 before ricocheting across the racing surface and triggering a chain-reaction accident that collected Alfredo and numerous other competitors. The violent crash brought out a 43-minute red flag and ended the afternoon for one of the race's fastest cars.
Despite the severity of the impact, Alfredo climbed from his damaged Chevrolet under his own power and later reflected on both the crash and the missed opportunity.
"I'm feeling a lot better now," Alfredo said. "At first I had to catch my breath and see what was hurting most because it was all over. We hit about as head-on as you could, and hitting straight concrete like that doesn't feel good."
The disappointment wasn't just the accident itself, but the result that slipped away.
"I'm pissed off, honestly, when it's something that's preventable," Alfredo said. "You don't know how many opportunities you're going to have like that. To go toe-to-toe with those guys and have the raw pace to win, and a strategy that was probably going to win us the race or certainly give us a top three, was really rewarding. I just hate we couldn't finish that off."
Although the final finishing position won't show it, Coronado marked another step forward for Alfredo and Viking Motorsports, who proved they had the speed to compete with the series' top teams throughout the weekend.
The team now turns its attention to Sonoma Raceway, where Alfredo will look to build on that momentum and convert speed into results.
