JESSE LOVE OVERCOMES ADVERSITY TO FINISH SIXTH AT NAVAL BASE CORONADO
CORONADO, Calif. — What could have been a frustrating weekend for Jesse Love turned into another impressive display of perseverance and determination as the Richard Childress Racing driver battled back from multiple setbacks to finish sixth in Saturday’s United Rentals Driven to Serve 250 at Naval Base Coronado.
The weekend was already one to remember for Love following the announcement that he will join the legendary Wood Brothers Racing organization in 2027, piloting the iconic No. 21 Ford in the NASCAR Cup Series. By race day, however, the focus shifted from future opportunities to overcoming immediate challenges.
Before the race even began, NASCAR officials ruled that the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet failed pre-race inspection because its lug nuts did not meet minimum size specifications. As a result, Love was forced to surrender his starting position, move to the rear of the field, and serve a pass-through penalty once the race went green. The penalty also cost the team its pit stall selection for next week's event at Sonoma Raceway.
The setback placed Love in a difficult position on a tight and demanding street course where passing opportunities were limited. After serving the required drive-through penalty under green flag conditions during the opening stages of the race, Love found himself buried deep in the field and crossed the line 35th at the conclusion of Stage 1.
Undeterred, the No. 2 team continued to chip away at the deficit. Love steadily worked his way through traffic and positioned himself back inside the top fifteen before the end of Stage 2, earning an eleventh-place stage finish and setting the stage for a strong final run.
The afternoon took another dramatic turn when a massive 23-car accident brought out one of two red flags during the event. Love was among the drivers caught up in the incident, adding yet another obstacle to an already challenging day.
Despite the damage and adversity, the Richard Childress Racing team refused to give up. Through smart strategy, quick repairs, and relentless driving, Love once again fought his way forward and was rewarded with a sixth-place finish when the checkered flag waved.
The result allows Love to maintain second place in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship standings as the battle for the title continues to intensify.
With the challenges of Coronado behind him, Love now turns his attention to Sonoma Raceway, where he will look to continue building momentum and close the gap in the championship chase.
